Tough times: Dairy industry facing difficult year |

After a recovery in the industry in 2011, tumbling milk prices once again have West Side dairy producers facing tough times. The volatile nature of the industry has been reflected in the roller-coaster of the last four years, producers say, starting with 2009, one of the historically toughest years in an industry known for its ups and downs. Milk prices have tapered off from those of a year ago, those in the industry say, again falling below the persistently high production expenses, which are driven largely by feed costs. Dairy economist Annie AcMoody of Western United Dairymen said the mood around the dairy industry has definitely not been as bright in recent months.
